Sunday Episode I : my own version of 'Signs'...

ok there are definitely three relatively individual (but loosely connected) stories to update with from the past 24 hours or so, but instead of making one excessively long entry i am going to break them up george lucas/quentin tarantino style (yes, i am mixing both) into a few parts...enjoy -

I.

this is actually a continuation of what i mentioned in the latenite/early morning entry today (breaking in...). well yesterday evening was a fun time with the gang, and even though our team didn't win, it was fun to socialize as usual. with all the events packed into one long day, i was definitely exhausted come 130-200am, and got a ride home from my buddy damon (we call him double D since his last name begins with a 'D' as well, that and it avoids confusion with my roommate damon). earlier that evening i got a ride out to (gasp!) big 10 burrito (yes, it still sucks, but i was up for at least SOME food) with hal and AJ and figured i would head back with double D when his crew arrived. well amidst all this rapid planning i decided NOT to take my keys with me because...well of course SOMEONE would be home at the tank when i got back...right? wrong.

you guessed it, double D dropped me off and i headed for the door...sure enough the door was locked. i figured this was ok though, i had two roommates and i knew at least one should be home, most likely both. pretty much wrong again.

i tried to call james and he wasn't answering (i later found out they were somewhere else, and he had left his phone in his car, so he wouldn't get the messages until much later that day) and i reluctantly called damon (who had to get up early the next morning) but he didnt answer either. i went through the calls once again and started ringing the doorbell...no luck. then i started pounding on the door (i figured someone would call the cops eventually so i kept that to a minimum). for what has been a recurring event several times this week so far, i was ticked off at myself for doing something stupid (in this case not bringing my keys).

well this is where things changed and that whole signs reference comes in (signs being the M. Night Shyamalan movie starring mel gibson). you see in signs, a bunch of seemingly very random circumstances early in the movie/ lives of the characters come together in the end and help solve the problems they are faced with).

back to my version...

well there were still a few options, i could call double D back and just stay over at his place that night, but that seemed ridiculous, plus he was probably halfway across town at this point. another option was the one remaining key not owned by damon, james, or myself...but i really didn't want to make that call, and figured i would work things out on my own.

i jumped down our landscaping wall to the side yard and went to the back of the house hoping that just MAYBE someone had left the deck door open (this has not happened before, so i don't know what i was thinking). sure enough, it was locked. i was already REALLY tired from the entire day and was not in the mood for all of this crap (which i of course brought upon myself).

then another option, although kind of ridiculous, presented itself to me -

-remember that huge tank in our basement? yeah, the one i have posted at the beginning of these blogs with myself inside it and james standing beside it. well there was no way for us to get it down the stairs into the basement (too big) so we actually had to have our basement window removed to get the tank inside. well that was more than 3 months ago and us roommates have been joking/complaining how our landlord has STILL not fully reinstalled the window, and its only hanging there by a few nails...yeah, now you see where this is going.

this window is super expensive and easily weighs over 100 pounds. i was not sure how this would go (my partially incapacitated right hand didn't help either) but this was my best shot at this point in the night. i started pulling the nails out as best i could by hand, but one of them was so far in that it wouldn't budge (keep in mind i was doing all of this by the surrounding house lights and some extra light from my cell phone). i was pretty ticked...i had come this far and now a deeply imbedded nail was going to stop me.

then i remembered one other thing, our landlord had told us to leave the hammer for the nails out on the deck...which we did, over three months ago. it had of course dealt with all the weather of the summer and was quite rusty, but i figured it was worth the shot. sure enough, the nail popped out and now i had to move this giant window in the relative dark.
with a little bit of struggling, i managed to lift off the window, slide it down a bit and prop it on the side of the house...the fish tank lights were in sight through the blinds, and now all i had to was jump in...this of course had to involved climbing through a ton of spiders which had made their home near the window, so that was an added bonus (luckily im not afraid of spiders, but the webs are really annoying to climb through).

i finally climbed down into the basement and made sure the window was temporarily stable and then ran upstairs, unlocked the deck door and had to rig something out of folding chairs to make sure it wouldnt fall overnight (that would be insanely expensive). with a little bit of paranoia as to the window falling and loving the fact that we would be increasing the insect fauna in our apartment by 200% that night i was FINALLY able to get to bed.

today james and i reinstalled the window and drove the nails in pretty securely, so repeating such a feat will not be possible, and it should also dissuade any of you who are thinking about breaking in and stealing my lungfishes. my lesson is learned, and the good old coelacanth keychain will not be leaving my side when i leave the apartment in the future...at the same time, i have a feeling i could get lucky with the circumstances and random events could come together for me again...but i don't always like to push my luck. <:><
