ophthalmic regeneration...
funny how things you originally intend to be in-and-out operations end up taking a couple hours and entirely different ordeals than originally planned. that's what happened to me today on an always wonderful trip to the briarwood mall. yeah, i hate the mall, and those of you who know me know that i would not go there without good reason or at least life-threatening reasons.
a little over a year ago i switched to disposable contact lenses; i had been using regular soft contacts since my sophomore year of high school and getting new ones every year or two, but the disposables have gotten better since then and it was time for a switch. anyway, i went to lenscrafters for this, and had recently run out of contacts...i figured i would go there with my Rx and just get a refill on the lenses...of course they had other plans for me, no doubt connected with a mass conspiracy to keep me at the mall for as long as possible once they finally get me through the doors of the marshall field's entrance.
i walk in and explain to them i needed a refill on my contacts. they looked up my info and apparently it was over a year since i was last there, and 'my Rx had expired'. they said that i needed to get another contact/eye exam and update the Rx...yeah, at this point i had a feeling i was in trouble. i asked if i could just get a refill on the old Rx (stupid i know, but i wanted to get out of there, and my eyes didn't seem to have gotten any worse...but i'll get into that later). they said i needed the new Rx and exam, and that the doctor would be in in about 20 min, so i figured i would suck it up and stay.
about 5 min into my dane cook comedy central special on my iPod one of the assistants called me over and i was to start with the exam. she was pretty cool, and had an interesting european accent. this led me to believe she may be a spy and part of the mall-retention conspiracy, but i played along with all their tests and their letter charts and button clicking. mind you, i worked at an ophthalmologist's office for 4 years back in the day, so i had an idea of what they were doing, and had actually administered some of those very tests to patients myself.
anyway, she had me retake one of the tests, and the results were the same. i later met up with the doctor and we talked fishes for a while (he remembered that i worked on the muskegon river, and i knew he went fishing for salmon and steelhead out there, so we had decent small talk to pass the time of letter charts and blinking lights). anyway, sure enough i needed a new Rx....but the kicker? my eyes had actually gotten BETTER since my last visit. IN FACT, at my last visit, i brought my previous Rx in and my eyes had gotten BETTER at that time too. so yeah, my eyes have gotten progressively better over the last couple visits. why the HECK would i need a new Rx if the old one was merely more powerful than what i really needed (not headache-inducing more powerful, but just a bit clearer than normal 20/20)? i think the whole thing has got to be monetarily driven, OR it's the mall conspiracy, and they not only want to trap me in this infernal airborne pathogen & mallrat laden gap/hollister/gap kids/sunglasses hut/gap books facility.
either way, it was amusingly perplexing to the doctor and his assistant that my eyes have been getting progressively better over the years. he said whatever i'm doing, i should keep it up. i am writing this off to one of just a few things: either i should keep eating a lot of panchero's, buying/watching fishes, or eating tons of carrots & owls...guess we'll see, and until i narrow it down further, i'm just going to keep up with all three. well, that's the story of me and my mutant eyes...
...wait, i had one more possible explanation. when i was in india many many many years ago (i was probably around 7 or 8), i was bitten by some sort spider and was crippled for a good week or so and was on some moderate meds. i am thinking the super-powers have just taken a little longer to take affect a la peter parker style...we'll see how that pans out.
oh yeah, i was planning on the original trip being around $100...already a nice chunk of change, BUT luckily i recently had the UofM vision plan added to my medical insurance, so i saved...a WHOPPING $30...which brought my total bill for all this BS to a cool $275 (and i still need to get new glasses). yeah, i'm considering dropping the awesome vision care coverage AND just waiting a couple years until my eyes have fully repaired themselves and i am successfully battling doc ock and the green goblin. peace out <:><
more pics from the georgia aquarium trip coming up. one of the aquariums we visited on this trip had a butterfly garden, so believe it or not i snapped some shots here too:
