cool runnings...with bullets...
well it has been quite a busy week; i can't say that i'm disappointed to see it come to an end, but a chronically hectic schedule keeps things interesting every now and then. i was talking to one of my good friends earlier this week about a lot of stuff and one of the many points of advice i was given was 'rise above it'. although that may seem somewhat cheesy or even pseudophilosophical, i think it was appropriate advice...that said, i almost immediately thought of the movie 'cool runnings' which came out circa 1993 and was about the jamaican bobsled team. this is one of my favorite 'old' movies as it was a great story, and my entire family enjoyed it (and watched it several times). as some of you may know, its usually quite a process to find a movie that everyone in my family likes (rachel is usually the odd one out for the kids, and finding a parentally friendly movie always takes some extra effort).
anyway, great movie and i would highly recommend it. this ties in with the advice given in that there was a catchy song on the soundtrack (it was in the movie, but not on the actual CD...this always annoys me) titled 'rise above it'. i think it was during some training montage, but it has stuck in my head ever since. my gosh...that was 13 years ago!!! either way, if you havent seen it you should check it out. this should be especially appropriate for you winter-olympics obsessed folks.
while you are considering watching the movie, download the song 'rise above it' by lock, stock and barrel; as well as one of the other main theme songs, 'i can see clearly now' by jimmy cliff.
now on to the randomized bullets (been a while since i have done this, but it moves things along better...that and i don't care about continuity in this case).
- milano cookies should be made illegal. i blame sarah for being introduced to them...i have eaten almost two bags in the course of a week and a half. they are double chocolate too. if you see these in the grocery store turn and run away, if you already have a bag in your house, it's already too late. i'll gladly take them off your hands though.
- i discovered i have the entire soundtrack to swingers on iTunes. here i was considering buying the album but then realized it got dumped on my computer when we downloaded james' iPod to the laptop in preparation for Party at The Tank II. regardless, damon and i recently watched this movie (i had not seen it since the first time in 2000) and it was MUCH better than the first time. i think the crowd was different at the time, and i didn't have as much of an appreciation for the dialogue as i do now. man, vince vaughn looked very different back then!
- why the heck to i even bother ordering from Tio's??? they took over an hour to get to our place tonight, and it's not like i ordered at a peak hour either. i was nearly comatose when they finally arrived...i wonder if the guy knew it took him over 1:10 to get to our place (which is probably a 10 min drive away). i suppose the positive point is that panchero's doesn't deliver, or i would probably never leave the apartment.
- my friend rakhi (coincidentally also a former student in my fish class from 3 years ago) has taken on the role of my hindi movie advisor. it's been interesting as of late since i have surpassed her in knowledge of the three films she has recommended to me so far (Hum Tum, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Main Hoon Na) with much more intricate knowledge of the background and the songs too (she beats me in the language area since i don't know hindi, but i do read subtitles really well). anyway, in her latest recommendation, Lagaan, i find it humorous that she prioritizes the selling points of the movies in terms of what i (apparently) find interesting. latest comment: "...and don't worry, what you're really concerned about; the girl is good looking." i suppose i can't necessarily dispute this development.
- looks like double D and i will be taking on a legion of euchre players this weekend...this is going to be pretty sweet since i have not played euchre in quite some time, but its by far my favorite card game and we played it all the time in undergrad. i believe we would make life-changing (or at least academically important) decisions based on the outcomes of euchre games. anyway, as with anything else, when there is a competition involved i play to win. this should be an interesting tournament and definitely a good time.
- i dont know if i mentioned this before, but andrea apparently thinks i'll only live to the ripe old age of 56...she has a theory that i'm going through a mid-life crisis. i don't know what all this is based on, but it has come to my attention through various sources, and recently she doesn't think i'm over it quite yet. yet she is still trusting me to take on her rope fish as it has grown too large for its two smaller tankmates at her place. my failure to keep the fish named andrea alive may play a role in all of this.
- apparently there is a new fish store that has opened near bloomfield which is called 'the fish guy'. i am either going to take legal action to get that name changed, or see if i can just get a discount at the store. win-win situation.
- tomorrow is the great crawl. should make for an interesting evening to say the least as we'll have appearances from several of the usual suspects, plus a ton of other SPH folks. sarah is coming out for the event, as i had mentioned earlier, and this always makes for an eventful evening. andy will be meeting up with us a BW3...hopefully i don't forget to call back with the plans this time (sorry about last friday)! ok i'll let the inevitable pics speak for themselves when the time comes.
-and finally, damon has to wake up in about two hours (4am) to take james and christy to the airport so they can fly to a wedding in san diego. waking up early sucks...no exceptions. as long as it's not me, however, i find it humorous.
good night <:><
random pics: as we were leaving connor's and headed for the arena everyone decided it would be a great idea to pile onto this bobcat construction vehicle. being an opportunistic photographer i snapped the shot. later in the night james decided it would be good to throw large chunks of ice into the middle of main street. yeah, wildcard.
